EMDR and Trauma Counseling
Feeling caught in the past and that no matter how far you try to push the memories down, they JUST. KEEP. COMING. BACK.
You just want PEACE. To move forward. To stop feeling like you're not the one in control of your life.
You know that the idea of having to talk about all those painful things has kept you from doing anything. It's not fun. It's uncomfortable. And it's scary. You get an awful pit in your stomach just thinking about this stuff. You don't want to have to relive the experiences and so you just keep telling yourself it's not a big deal. Everyone goes through bad stuff. I should be over this by now....But you're not.
EMDR AND TRAUMA COUNSELING CAN HELP CHANGE THAT
EMDR (or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence based form of therapy that can rapidly speed up the processing of traumatic memories. The benefits can be phenomenal and one of the biggest draws is that this type of therapy doesn't require a great deal of talking. It works in a way that allows your brain to reprocess the traumas of your past and to heal itself.
Traumatic memories tend to get "stuck" in our brains in a way that keeps us from moving on. Like a bad sandwich eaten at midnight--traumatic memories aren't digested properly and you feel the painful reminders long afterwards. Without getting too technical, EMDR uses something called bilateral stimulation (BLS) to activate both sides of your brain, in a similar way to the REM sleep phase, and works to process, digest and make sense of those "stuck" memories (or that bad sandwich). The memories aren't erased--they will still be there--they just won't have the same "heat" to them that's currently holding you hostage. You can now start living and moving forward without each step (or bite, if we're going with the sandwich analogy) triggering the unpleasant reminders of what came before.
